Getting past the divorce

Divorce is hard. Even if you initiated it. Most didn’t imagine their lives this way. I’m not here to tell you how to make a divorce easy. I’m here to tell you that you can and will get through this.

Support

Surround yourself with your support system. You have people around you that love you. Utilize them. Don’t shut yourself away, isolated. Venture into the world. This may seem scary, as you don’t know how to venture out into the world without your significant other. Venture out with your support. When you feel lonely, call them. When you feel sad, call them. When you feel at your wits end, call them. I’m sure some of them will even come over, or have you come over. Take them up on it. Don’t try to do it all alone.

Grieve

Divorce is change, and a loss. Therefore, it’s completely natural to go through the grieving process (Denial, Anger, Bargaining, Depression, Acceptance). When your angry, get angry (through healthy expression). When you’re sad, cry. Allow yourself to grieve. Don’t always try to be strong and keep it all inside. It’s eventually going to come out. Just remember that as you’re going through this grieving process, don’t sit in it for too long. Though it’s totally naturally to experience all of these feelings, you don’t want to feel them forever. Grieve, and move forward. Don’t sit in it. If you find you are sitting in it, that’s ok, just remember to rely on the support that you have to help you get through.

You are loved

Remember that you are loved. After/during a divorce, again, even if you initiated it, sometimes it can feel like you are unlovable. You’re not! You are so so loved. Relationships sometimes don’t work out, and it’s usually for a million different reasons. Work on making yourself the healthiest version of you, and remember that you are loved, and are worthy of love. If you find it difficult to cope, seeking support from a counselor in Flower Mound, TX or Southlake, TX could be helpful. Again, it goes back to that support system that you identified earlier. Utilize them. They love you, and are there to help you remember that.
